Polysomnography (PSG) & MotionWatch 8
Polysomnography (PSG) is often described as the gold-standard in monitoring for sleep medicine, and whilst being a useful diagnostic tool in laboratory conditions there may be free-living situations where polysomnographic equipment is impractical when compared to actigraphs, such as CamNtech’s MotionWatch 8.
The first drawback is that PSG is almost exclusively limited to laboratory conditions with qualified technologists; although there has been some reported success with “unattended“ polysomnography conducted at home, there are also reported issues i.e. with sensor placement, recording body position and patient training. MotionWatch 8 however requires almost no patient training and the subject may be sent home with the actigraph simply strapped to their wrist.
One of the most common complaints of patients undergoing PSG is the invasive and uncomfortable nature of the equipment and that it impairs sleep; ECG, EMG, EEG and EOG may be combined to accurately measure sleep quality however if the patient cannot sleep well due to the quantity of sensors they are wearing there are obvious drawbacks. There is also what is known as the “first night effect” i.e. patients are acutely aware they are being monitored, often requiring a second night of monitoring to settle in to their normal rhythm. MotionWatch 8 is lightweight, wrist-worn and non-invasive allowing a patient to relax immediately into their natural sleep cycle and can be worn over days, weeks or even months.
One of the most significant issues is the cost associated with keeping someone at a sleep clinic overnight for PSG: anywhere from £600-£3000 per night depending on the size and complexity of the clinic. The cost of such monitoring makes MotionWatch 8 ideal for two situations: pre-PSG screening where a patient’s actigram is examined to determine if there is a case for PSG and long-term sleep studies conducted over weeks or months where PSG is simply too costly and invasive to be used.
In short: MotionWatch 8 is an ideal tool for sleep clinics or research as an alternative to PSG in certain situations; its size, weight and cost makes it an ideal tool for pre-PSG screening or as an alternative to PSG for long-term sleep analysis or studies.
