Welcome to the Cambridge Neurotechnology website. Cambridge Neurotechnology was founded in 1995 and in 1996 introduced the Actiwatch activity monitoring system. As the first truly light-weight system designed for long-term continuous use with subjects of all ages, it met with great success and continues to be enormously popular.

Since 1996 additional Actiwatch models have been introduced. These include models for measuring ambient light and the Actiwatch Score which allows subjective patient data to be captured alongside objective activity data.

In late 2003 CNT launched the Actiheart, an extremely light-weight combined activity and heart rate monitor containing a validated algorithm for calculating energy expended during physical activity.

2004 saw the launch of the Tremorwatch, a unit designed to measure the level and severity of Parkinsonian Tremor using a validated algorithm. The company also launched the Neurodiary a data capture device for subjective monitoring of Dyskinesia in Parkinson's patients.

During 2006 CNT re-engineered two of its products the Actiwatch Mini and the Actiband and introduced a new product the Actiheart for Sleep.

The Actiwatch Mini now features enhanced battery life and recording time and is fully waterproof.

The Actiband, a simple, ultra-lightweight and waterproof activity and energy expenditure monitor is now more versatile and can be mounted on either the wrist, waist or leg. The analysis software has also been improved.

The Actiheart for Sleep is a software option for the Actiheart which makes use of Heart Rate Variability analysis to screen for Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and to detect sleep stages.

Product News

In March 2007, CNT introduced a new product: the ActiLight, which consists of a stand-alone high resolution light sensor physically and electrically separate from the Actiwatch. The advantage of such an arrangement is that the light sensor can be positioned for the optimum capture of light data which is not the case when the light sensor is built into the Actiwatch case. Using Sleep Analysis software the light data can still be combined with the Activity data from an Actiwatch and displayed synchronously in one file.

Collaborative Studies

The Actiheart is being used by the UK Medical Research Council's (MRC) epidemiology unit in the following collaborative studies:

  • Southampton Women's Survey, MRC Epidemiology Resource Centre
  • ROOTS Study, University of Cambridge, Department of Psychiatry
  • BEACHeS (Birmingham healthy Eating, Active lifestyle for Children Study), University of Birmingham, Department of Public Health & Epidemiology
  • Physical activity and body composition in the 1993 Pelotas Birth Cohort, Federal University of Pelotas, Brazil
  • CHASE (Child Heart And health Study in England), St George's, University of London
  • InterAct Validation Project (Validation of the European Physical Activity Questionnaire in 10 European Countries)
  • Studies in Greenland, Inter99 and Kenya in collaboration with Steno Diabetes Center, Denmark
  • 1946 Birth Cohort, MRC National Survey of Health & Development - Pilot phase
  • Twins Study, St Thomas' Hospital - Pilot study completed

Other Projects

Nottingham NHS Eczema Study

Nottingham NHS are in the initial stages of conducting a Softened Water Eczema Trial (SWET study) to assess whether ion-exchange water softeners can help ease eczema.  The study will be using Actiwatches to monitor 300 children's night-time scratching movements, alongside research nurses also recording eczema severity.

Botnia Study, Finland

The Actiheart is currently being used in the PPP-Botnia Study (prevalence, prediction and prevention of diabetes), a part of the Botnia Study in Western Finland.  In this ongoing intervention study, 300 subjects (150 intervention and 150 controls), are monitored using the Actiheart over a period of 5 years.

The aim of this study is to identify hereditary, environmental, metabolic and other factors which cause diabetes and to develop ways to prevent the disease and its complications.

Emotikon Study, Germany

The Actiheart is currently being used in a longitudinal study to assess the motor ability and physical fitness of school children in Brandenburg, Germany.  The Actiheart is used in conjunction with questionnaires to provide an objective measure of physical activity and energy expenditure.

Environmental Policy

The EU requires, under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2002/96/EC, that manufacturers and/or distributors of Electronic and/or Electrical Equipment manage and pay for the collection and further handling of WEEE products, as well as provide WEEE-related information to their customers.

Cambridge Neurotechnology has taken the following approach to complying with this Directive:

  • Cambridge Neurotechnology has registered with an approved producer compliance scheme (PCS) in accordance with the requirements of the WEEE Directive.
  • Cambridge Neurotechnology will provide free recycling for all of its WEEE products when returned to CNT.
  • Cambridge Neurotechnology WEEE products will be designed with recycling, reuse and waste management as a consideration.
  • Cambridge Neurotechnology WEEE products will be labelled or stamped with the WEEE marking in accordance with European Standard EN 50419.
